Men At Work/Under Construction (Manhood Training)

Men at Work/Under Construction is a metaphor used to describe the fact that we are undergoing a process of "building" men.  Men at Work is a life skills and mentoring program for at-risk boys in middle school and high school. The program takes place on site after school and features a variety of skill enhancement activities designed to mold young boys into respectable and independent young men.  Listed below are some of the activities that we provide to give them a well-rounded program to make them positive contributors to society.

  • Mentoring

Mentoring is a component that we blend into both of our vocational and technical programs.  For instance, during any class, we offer a regimented program of mentoring that features goal-setting, stress management, conflict-resolution, chivalry (manners), money management, dressing for success i.e., how to shine shoes, shave, how to tie a tie; having a healthy respect for women, work ethic, health and hygiene, alcohol and tobacco prevention, gang abatement, communication skills, and college and career prep.

  • Vocational and Technical Programs

Our vocational programs are designed to provide our students with fundamental skills that "fathers" once taught to "sons" as  a "rite of passage" into manhood.  Before boys even have any idea of what kind of work they plan to do as adults, men would introduce them to a certain skill that they could use to make money or just a handy skill in case of emergency.  This would be used as a foray into a skill for the future or an activity that men would use to bond with their sons.  Our vocational program include basic automotive, basic carpentry, basic electrical, basic plumbing, computer applications, audio engineering, landscaping and lawncare, video production, roofing, fence building, painting, and laying drywall.

  • Hobbies

One thing that we encourage all young men to do is to pick up a hobby.  When at times life appears to get boring or too stressful; we teach them a variety of skills that they can use as therapy or to make cash.  Some of our activities include but are not limited to: sewing and embroidery, art, stencilling, tie-dyeing, coin, stamp, card-collecting; jewelry-making, sculpting, music, dance, wood-working, hair-cutting, building computers, and furniture-making.  All of these activities are interwoven in our Men at Work curriculum.

  • Sports Academy

In addition to teaching and coaching youth on safe techniques and rules of various sports; we also educate them on available collegiate scholarships, off the field professions, and health benefits for each sport.  We provide programs in lacrosse, hockey, football, baseball, volleyball, golf, tennis, bowling, go-kart racing, and basketball.

These activities are included in the Men At Work mentoring curriculum. All of these activities are covered during the course of 16-20 weeks. The cost is $300 per 90 minute to 2 hour session.  A minimum of two sessions per week includes all materials and supplies for up to 25 students. This is a 50% discount through December 23rd!
