  • SPECIAL PROGRAMS

    Kwanzaa For Kids

One Day Workshop (90 Minutes to 2 Hours)

This is a workshop we conduct only during the month of December that teaches and teachers from all walks of life about various aspects, the history, and relevance regarding the  African-American holiday of Kwanzaa, whcih is patterned after many traditional continental African first-fruits harvest celebrations.  Participants learn the history, purpose, and meanings behind the symbols and principles of the seven day festival.  During each hands on workshop, participants will participate in learning either a traditonal African or Caribbean song and/or dance; be treated to stroytelling, and learn to make a gift they can keep in remembrance of the workshop and in honor of the holiday.

Most of all they will walk away with a greater understanding and appreciation for this hiliday which will in turn arnmer more respectful, mannerable, and obedient students as a result of the experience.

Steel Jammin!

African & Carribean Drum & Dance!

Probably no other program we offer signifies our greates achievement other than our African and Caribbean drum and dance program.  Teaching and performing traditional African and Caribbean songs, dances, stories while describing the history of these fabled lands has inspired countless numbers in attendance to continue to reach back and explore the African experience through song and dance.  In addition to teaching the art form, we teach costume design and explain the relevance of each routine to today's contemporary standards.

Bakari Sports Academy

We are so pleased to offer for the first time ever - Double Dutch and Kickball! Double Dutch  is no longer a bonding activity for girls but an aerobic one as well that promotes teamwork, rhythm & rhyming, and creativity for everyone! This is our featured activity for the fall for our sports component!  This is no longer an activity for those in the North and Midwest! Kickball is an added fun activity for younger children.  We also offer training and skill development in non-traditional sports for at-risk youth such as golf, tennis, lacrosse, volleyball, bowling, and hockey.  We want to introduce at-risk youth to the rules of the game and to many un-used scholarship opportunities availabe to minorities should they take an intereset to the sport.

Af-Craft-A-Ganza!

This is our African and Caribbean inspired arts and crafts program geard to children in Grades K-6.  In additon to helping with hand/eye coordination, developing creativity, and teaching teamwork; we use the time as an opportunity to teach children about the history and cultures associated with the artwork throughout the African Diaspora.  We teach children as young as 4 how to tie-dye, make jewelry, make dools, drums, musical instruments, candles, and make a picture frame!
